Executive Summary
EduCreds Labs is an early-stage African technology company building the infrastructure for tamper-proof, instantly verifiable academic credentials. Founded in June 2025 and headquartered in Kampala, Uganda, EduCreds provides institutions with a platform to issue, manage, and revoke digital credentials anchored on blockchain — eliminating the fraud, delay, and cost that has plagued academic verification across Sub-Saharan Africa for decades. The company has progressed from concept to working prototype in under six months, earned acceptance into the National Innovation Hub incubator and Microsoft for Startups program, and initiated advisory engagement with PwC.
EduCreds is now formally raising a $100,000 pre-seed round structured as three tranches (SAFE for Tranches 2 and 3) to complete legal incorporation, harden its cloud infrastructure, deploy a paid pilot with five institutions, and build the commercial pipeline that will support a $250K–$500K seed round in 2027. The company targets $2.5M ARR by 2028, serving 500 institutions across Sub-Saharan Africa. This is a pre-revenue, pre-incorporation stage company. All projections are forward-looking and subject to risk.
The Problem
- Fraud at scale: 40% of paper certificates issued by African institutions contain material errors or are outright fraudulent — undermining employer trust and institutional reputation.
- Painfully slow verification: Manual verification takes 2–4 weeks and requires physical letters, stamps, and follow-ups — blocking hiring, visa processing, and academic admission decisions.
- No shared infrastructure: Institutions operate in silos; there is no pan-African standard or shared ledger for credential verification. Each employer must engage each institution separately.
- Students bear the cost: Graduates pay for notarised copies, courier fees, and waiting time — repeatedly — every time a new employer or institution requests verification.
- Regulatory risk for institutions: Fraudulent certificates expose universities to reputational damage, legal liability, and loss of accreditation — with no scalable technical defence available today.
Our Solution
EduCreds provides a multi-stakeholder platform where academic institutions issue cryptographically signed, W3C-standard Verifiable Credentials to students. These credentials are anchored on an EVM-compatible blockchain via the did:educreds DID method — providing a tamper-evident public record without storing any personally identifiable information on-chain.
Employers and third parties verify credentials instantly via a public verification portal or API — in seconds, not weeks, at near-zero cost. The platform implements the EduCreds Verification Framework (EVF) and an AI-powered Trust Agent that scores institutional trust using Proof-of-Institutional-Compliance (PoIC) — building a reputation layer on top of the credential infrastructure over time.

Why Now · Why Africa · Why EduCreds
Why Now
- W3C Verifiable Credentials reached formal recommendation status in 2022 — standards are now mature enough for enterprise adoption.
- Africa's digital identity infrastructure is accelerating: Uganda's NITA is mandating digital systems; the African Union's HAQAA initiative is pushing credential harmonisation.
- Microsoft Azure and cloud infrastructure are now accessible and affordable in the region, removing the cost barrier to deployment.
- Post-pandemic, remote hiring has exploded — international employers need fast, trusted verification of African credentials at scale.
Why Africa
- 600M+ students projected in Africa by 2030 — the largest and fastest-growing credentialing market in the world.
- Africa has the highest credential fraud rate globally — the pain is acute and the willingness to pay for a solution is rising.
- No dominant incumbent exists in the African market — the space is open for a well-positioned, locally-rooted provider.
- African governments are actively investing in digital public infrastructure — regulatory tailwinds are strong.
Why EduCreds
- Founded and built in Africa by Africans — deep contextual understanding of institutional workflows and pain points.
- Open standards approach (W3C VC, OID4VC, SD-JWT) ensures interoperability with global systems — not a walled garden.
- Privacy-first architecture: student PII is never written on-chain — only cryptographic anchors, enabling GDPR/PDPA compliance.
- Early-mover advantage with institutional trust network effects: the first platform to onboard 100 institutions creates a verification network that competitors cannot replicate quickly.
- Already engaged with PwC for advisory, National Innovation Hub for incubation, and Microsoft for infrastructure — a credibility stack unusual for a pre-seed company.
